In recent years, the saiga population in the North-Western Caspian region has been at an extremely low level - about 3500-5000 individuals. Long-term studies carried out on the territory of the Stepnoi Reserve of the Astrakhan region, selected as a model site, made it possible to identify the features of the spatial distribution and ethological structure of this population, and also to establish that its main part throughout the year is kept within the Stepnoi Reserve and in the surrounding areas.
Численность популяции сайгака Северо-Западного Прикаспия в последние годы находится на крайне низком уровне – около 3500-5000 особей. Многолетние исследования, проведенные на территории заказника «Степной» Астраханской области, выбранной в качестве модельного участка, позволили выявить особенности пространственного размещения и этологической структуры данной популяции, а также установить, что основная ее часть в течение всего года держится в пределах заказника «Степной» и на прилегающих территориях.
Aim. The saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica L.) is the last hoofed mammal surviving in the Russian steppe
which is on the verge of extinction today. The aim of this article is to assess the current state of the saiga in Russia, determine the causes of the reduction in its population and area and to develop recommendations for the conservation of this species.
